So, there are a few things going on in the world that I feel I need to say something about:
1) Day Laborers: in Herndon, VA (suburb of DC), the town council voted 5 - 2 to allow a government grant to be used to fund a location for day laborers (mainly illegal Hispanic immigrants) to gather. They will go to this trailer (instead of the local 7-11) where their perspective employers pick them up, take them to the job site, they work all day, and then they get paid cash (under the table), then are dropped back off at the trailer. I am really torn about how I feel about this issue. On the one hand, these people should not be here taking away actual citizen's jobs, but on the other hand, most American citizens are "too proud" to do this type of work for the money the immigrants are being paid. I just am not sure how I feel about this. Thoughts?
2) Cindy Sheehan: I DO know how I feel about this - GO CINDY GO!!!! This is the mother who is camping outside Bush's ranch (1600 acres, mind you - and why don't they just drill for oil on his land instead of the Artic - but I digress) because her son was killed in Iraq. She wants Bush to talk to her, but he won't, and she wants the troops removed from Iraq, but he won't do that either. I am so glad she is doing this - putting a human face on this tragedy we call the Iraq War. I whole-heartedly support the troops, but I believe you can do that, and not support the war. I want every last American to be brought home, walking on two feet, bringing back exactly what they had, body parts and all, when sent over there. You see all of the deaths on televsion, but they rarely focus on the thousands of men and women who have come back with major injuries and mental illness. We will be suffering from this war for a long time, generations to come. I see that there were vigils in all 50 states last night. Let's make these things bigger and better - but support our troops also.
Uumph....Ok, I am stepping down off my soap box. Spam away...
DEF received his offer letter from his new company - 50% raise over what he was making (and it was not much to begin with); very good health, dental and vision benefits; stock options; 12 days vacation; 8 holidays; sick leave; closed and paid leave between Christmas and New Years; paid tuition; and bonuses and overtime. He starts on August 29 - he told his old job last week - and what did they say "ok". That's all. Oh well - they are jerks anyway.
DEF, the mutt and I are headed to my sister's house tonight to visit them until Monday, so no posting til next Tuesday. Hopefully, I can write to say I won thousands on the slots or blackjack tables in Atlantic City.
Have a great weekend, my dear readers.
Til next time...
